"FOSSIL FOOLS": your climate messages loud and clear

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Local people want climate action NOW - placards, banners and speeches at Newcastle's COP28 rally and march all spelled it out. And "Hear Our Voices" was the call by Climate Action Newcastle convener Jacky Doran, in speeches outside the Civic Centre on the Global Day of Action (see report and video of speech here).

The reasons why marchers expect decision-makers (local, national, global) to stop delay and backsliding are captured in these pictures and videos shot by our volunteers. Protestors are making changes in their own lives and urged our leaders to seize the sustainable solutions that we all know can help protect future generations.

Among the young speakers at the rally outside Newcastle Civic Centre were were Gwen Lewis-Hedley (youth climate activist) (above) and Sarah Peters (Young Greens).

The protestors then marched down Northumberland Street, past the Monument (and Christmas markets) to Brunswick Methodist Church Hall.

People and groups travelled from around the area, bringing hand-made placards and banners. Marchers included church and community organisations, families, students and many grandparents expressing their fears for the legacy being left for future generations.

This first video is a chance to hear from some of the groups who took part in the "Green Fest" stalls gathering in Brunswick Hall after the rally.

And here's the full report.
